Mounjaro cost in Canada
Mounjaro's price at the till is the drug cost plus a pharmacy markup plus a dispensing fee, and the last two vary by pharmacy. We haven't published a checked Mounjaro price yet, so this page explains what drives the number and how to get a quote.

What Mounjaro is approved for
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is made by Eli Lilly Canada. Health Canada’s product monograph describes it as a once-weekly injection, used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It also has an indication for children aged 10 to under 18 with type 2 diabetes, taken with metformin or basal insulin.
Prescribers can write a prescription for any reason they judge appropriate, but the approved use is what public plans and many private plans follow. A sister product, Zepbound, carries the same ingredient with a different approved use, and we cover it on its own page.
How Mounjaro comes and how the dose steps up
The KwikPen is a multi-dose pen that delivers four weekly doses of one strength. The monograph’s strengths run from 2.5 mg to 15 mg in 2.5 mg steps, and it starts every adult at 2.5 mg once weekly. The monograph describes that first dose as for starting treatment, not for blood sugar control, and moves to 5 mg after four weeks.
Raising the dose after that is a prescriber decision, in 2.5 mg steps. This matters for price because each strength is a separate pen, so the price you are quoted today may change when your dose does.
What makes up the price
A pharmacy’s price for a prescription has three parts, and they are worth asking about separately.
- Drug cost. What the pharmacy pays to buy the pen, plus any markup it adds on top.
- Markup. A percentage some pharmacies add to the drug cost. It is set by the pharmacy or its chain, so it is a main reason totals differ.
- Dispensing fee. The pharmacy’s charge for checking and filling the prescription. Public plans fix this fee for the people they cover. For everyone else, including people paying out of pocket, most provinces let each pharmacy set it.
We haven’t published a checked Mounjaro price yet. When we do, it will appear in the price tag at the top of this page with the pharmacy, the strength, the supply it covers and the date we checked. Our methodology explains how we record prices.

A formulary is the list of drugs a public plan pays for. We could not confirm that any province’s formulary lists Mounjaro as of 3 October 2026, and we say so rather than guess. Two primary sources show where things stand.
BC PharmaCare published a drug information sheet for Mounjaro that shows its status as “Under Review”, with public input open from 25 February to 24 March 2026. The pan-Canadian Pharmaceutical Alliance, which negotiates drug prices for public plans together, lists Mounjaro as under consideration for negotiation, with a letter of acknowledgement sent to Eli Lilly Canada on 28 August 2026.
Other sites claim specific provincial listings. We don’t repeat those unless we can read them on a plan’s own page. For your province, see coverage, or the province pages for Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta.
Savings, private plans and help with cost
Eli Lilly Canada’s mymounjaro Savings and Support Program is open to Canadian residents prescribed Mounjaro KwikPen. Lilly’s page says it includes a savings card “regardless of insurance coverage”, help with private insurance forms, and free digital resources, and that exclusions and exceptions may apply. Our Mounjaro savings card guide walks through who it suits.
If you have a private plan through work, ask the plan whether Mounjaro needs prior authorization, which is the insurer’s version of special authorization: your prescriber sends a form and the insurer decides before it pays.
How to ask a pharmacy for a quote
Quotes for the same prescription can differ, so it is worth calling two or three pharmacies. You don’t need to be a customer to ask.
- Have your prescription details ready: Mounjaro KwikPen, the strength, and the supply (one pen covers four weeks).
- Ask for the drug cost and the dispensing fee separately, and for the total.
- Ask whether the price changes if your strength goes up.
- Ask whether the pharmacy has the pen in stock. Confirm this before you transfer a prescription.
- Write down the date and the name of the person you spoke to.
Compare the totals, not the drug price alone. A pharmacy with a lower drug price can still have a higher total if its fee is higher.
What to do next
- Check plan rules in your province before you assume you’ll pay the full price.
- See how online providers work and what each charges for the program, which is separate from the cost of the medication.
- Read about generics for how generic versions are reviewed.
- Return to all GLP-1 prices.
If a prescriber or pharmacist has told you something different about your situation, follow them. This page is information, not medical advice.
Questions people ask
What is Mounjaro approved for in Canada?
Health Canada's product monograph lists Mounjaro (tirzepatide) as a once-weekly injection for type 2 diabetes in adults and in children aged 10 to under 18, as an adjunct to diet and exercise. Weight management is not an indication on the Mounjaro monograph.
Why does the Mounjaro price differ between pharmacies?
The drug cost is largely the same, but each pharmacy sets its own markup and, outside public plans, its own dispensing fee. Two pharmacies in the same city can quote different totals for the same pen.
Is there a Mounjaro savings card in Canada?
Eli Lilly Canada runs the mymounjaro Savings and Support Program for people prescribed Mounjaro KwikPen. Its terms say exclusions and exceptions may apply, so read them before relying on it.
How many pens do I use in a month?
One KwikPen holds four weekly doses of the same strength, so it covers about four weeks. A new strength means a new pen.
Do provincial plans pay for Mounjaro?
We could not confirm a public listing for any province in the sources we read on 3 October 2026. BC PharmaCare lists it as under review, and the national price negotiation is at the consideration stage.
