Is Mounjaro on the Alberta Drug Benefit List?

The Alberta Drug Benefit List is the formulary, the list of drugs Alberta’s public plans pay for, and Alberta Blue Cross is where it is published. Special authorization is the step where a prescriber asks the plan to pay for a drug that is listed only for certain uses.

We searched for Mounjaro on the Alberta Blue Cross and Alberta government pages and could not confirm a listing as of 3 October 2026. Third-party sites say Alberta is reviewing tirzepatide with a decision due in the third quarter of 2026. We don’t repeat that as fact because we couldn’t read it on an Alberta page. The national price negotiation shows Mounjaro as under consideration, with a letter of acknowledgement sent to Eli Lilly Canada on 28 August 2026, and provinces usually list a drug only after that process.

Ask your pharmacist to check your own Alberta Health Care plan coverage, because coverage can depend on the plan you belong to.

Employer plans and Alberta Blue Cross

Many Albertans have drug coverage through work. Alberta Blue Cross administers employer plans, and each employer chooses what its plan covers. That is the main difference from provinces where one public formulary decides for nearly everyone.

Alberta Blue Cross publishes a special authorization request form for employer plans covering weight loss drugs, and tirzepatide is named on it. That form is about plan rules for weight-loss use, which is not an indication on Mounjaro’s Health Canada monograph, so it doesn’t tell you how a plan treats Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes. We haven’t confirmed the criteria. Call the number on your benefits card and ask whether Mounjaro needs prior authorization, which is the insurer’s version of special authorization.

Dispensing fees in Alberta

A dispensing fee is the pharmacy’s charge for filling a prescription. In Alberta the regulator stays out of it. The Alberta College of Pharmacy says that under the Health Professions Act it cannot set dispensing or professional fees or issue guidelines on them, and that discounting them is not prohibited.

Alberta’s government publishes the fee that applies to public-plan claims on its pharmacy services and fees page. That page doesn’t say what pharmacies charge private or out-of-pocket customers, and the College says it doesn’t set those fees. For Mounjaro, call a few pharmacies and ask for the drug cost, the fee and the total as separate lines. We haven’t published a checked Alberta price for Mounjaro yet.

Alberta pharmacist prescribing

Alberta’s pharmacist prescribing authority is tiered. Pharmacists who hold additional prescribing authorization can start many prescription drugs. Pharmacists without it can adapt an existing prescription or act in an emergency. The Alberta College of Pharmacy says prescribing under that authorization must rest on the assessment of a pharmacist who holds it, and that not every pharmacist does.

Mounjaro is approved for type 2 diabetes, so it needs a prescriber’s assessment of you first. That might be a physician, a nurse practitioner or a pharmacist with the authorization. If you already have a prescription, ask a pharmacist whether they can adapt it.

Savings and help with cost

Eli Lilly Canada’s mymounjaro Savings and Support Program is open to Canadian residents prescribed Mounjaro KwikPen. Lilly’s page says the savings card applies regardless of insurance coverage, and that exclusions and exceptions may apply. Our savings card guide explains how it works.

What to do next

Questions people ask

Is Mounjaro covered in Alberta?

We could not confirm a listing on the Alberta Drug Benefit List in the sources we read on 3 October 2026. Group plans through employers set their own rules, and some require special authorization.

Who sets pharmacy dispensing fees in Alberta?

Each pharmacy does. The Alberta College of Pharmacy says it cannot set or give guidelines for dispensing or professional fees, and discounting them is not prohibited.

Does Alberta Blue Cross cover Mounjaro?

Alberta Blue Cross administers many employer plans, and each plan decides its own drug coverage. We could not confirm a rule for individual non-group plans, so ask Alberta Blue Cross or your plan administrator.

Can an Alberta pharmacist prescribe Mounjaro?

Only pharmacists with additional prescribing authorization can start a prescription drug, and not every pharmacist has it. Mounjaro is approved for type 2 diabetes, so a prescriber's assessment comes first.

Can I ask an Alberta pharmacy to lower its dispensing fee?

You can ask. Because fees are not regulated in Alberta, pharmacies may compete on them, and some offer different fees for different services.
