Types of online care
Online weight loss clinics in Canada fall into four care models: prescription service, pharmacy program, multi-service platform and metabolic program. They differ in how much support sits around the prescription.

What each kind of provider handles
A care model describes how a service is organized around your prescription: who assesses you, what happens between renewals, and where the medication comes from. We use four. They are not grades. Each is a reasonable choice for someone, and each asks you to give something up. The same framework is applied to every provider, as set out in our methodology and on the providers page.
Prescription service
A prescription service is built around a short assessment, often an online form with no live visit, and a prescription. Renewals happen on request, and there is little or no structured support between them.
It tends to suit people who already know what they are asking for, have a family doctor who can monitor them, and want a simple, low-friction process. You give up scheduled follow-up, side-effect support and dose guidance between renewals, so you carry more of that yourself or with your own doctor.
Some services in this group bundle the medication into one monthly price, and others charge a visit fee and bill the pharmacy separately. Check which before you compare.
Pharmacy program
In a pharmacy program, a pharmacy, either a chain or an online pharmacy, assesses you, prescribes or coordinates a prescriber, and dispenses the medication. Some require pickup in store, and some deliver.
It tends to suit people who want assessment and dispensing in one place, often with a drug plan billed directly. You give up some choice of pharmacy, and in-person pickup may be required.
Multi-service platform
A multi-service platform treats many conditions under one account and subscription, for example weight, hair loss, sexual health, skin and birth control. A GLP-1 is one service among several, usually reached through the same assessment-and-message format as the others.
It tends to suit people who want several treatments handled in one place with one login. You give up depth: weight management support is one service among many, so ask what is specific to the weight program, such as follow-up cadence and who you message.
Metabolic program
A metabolic program is built around weight and metabolic health. Typical features are lab work, scheduled follow-ups through dose changes, side-effect management, and nutrition or coaching support on top of the prescription.
It tends to suit people who want structured, ongoing clinical support and regular check-ins. You usually give up some simplicity and flexibility: the monthly cost can be higher, and the program may ask for a longer commitment.
Which model should you look at first?
Start with what you need around the prescription rather than the headline price. If you want the simplest route and have a doctor to lean on, a prescription service may fit. If you want one pharmacy to handle it all, look at pharmacy programs. If you want one account for several treatments, look at multi-service platforms. If you want scheduled support, look at metabolic programs.
Then compare the program cost and the medication cost separately, because some providers bundle them and some do not. Our providers page shows the same ten fields for each service. For what a drug plan may pay, see coverage.
This page is general information, not medical advice. Ask a prescriber or pharmacist about your own situation.
Questions people ask
Can a provider fit more than one care model?
Yes. When a provider genuinely spans two, we show the primary model and note the second in its profile.
Is one care model safer than another?
We do not rank them. Each describes how care is organized, and a prescriber or pharmacist can tell you what is appropriate for your health.
How do you decide which model a provider belongs to?
We read its sign-up flow, pricing and terms, and classify from what it does rather than how it markets itself. Each profile states the date we checked.
