Where BC PharmaCare stands on Mounjaro

BC PharmaCare is the province’s public drug plan. It reviews each drug for a specific medical condition, and coverage applies only to the conditions it names. For Mounjaro, PharmaCare’s published drug information sheet describes the indication as improving blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes, taken with metformin, metformin and a sulfonylurea, or metformin and an SGLT2 inhibitor. It lists Mounjaro’s own status as “Under Review”.

The sheet also shows what PharmaCare does with related drugs. It lists two other injectable GLP-1 medications, Trulicity and Victoza, as non-benefits, meaning PharmaCare doesn’t pay for them. Public input on Mounjaro ran from 25 February 2026 to 24 March 2026. We didn’t find a decision after that, so we don’t state that Mounjaro is or isn’t covered. We’ll update this page when PharmaCare publishes one.

Special authority and the deductible

Special Authority is PharmaCare’s version of a prior approval. For some covered drugs, your prescriber submits a request, PharmaCare checks it against the criteria, and only then does it pay. Because Mounjaro is still under review, there is no Mounjaro Special Authority form for us to describe, and we haven’t made one up.

Fair PharmaCare is the income-based layer. Your household income sets a deductible, which is the amount you pay first, and a family maximum. Once you pass the deductible, PharmaCare pays a share of eligible costs. Only eligible costs count, so a drug PharmaCare doesn’t cover doesn’t move you toward either number. If you are registered, ask your pharmacist how Mounjaro would be treated on your account.

Dispensing fees in BC

A dispensing fee is the pharmacy’s charge for filling a prescription. In BC, PharmaCare sets a maximum dispensing fee for the people it covers, and pharmacies set their own fees otherwise. BC’s own pharmacy fees page describes a spread of fees across pharmacies, and says a pharmacy can charge Fair PharmaCare members more than PharmaCare’s maximum until they reach their family maximum.

For Mounjaro, that means the dispensing fee is one of the things to compare between pharmacies. Ask for the drug cost, the fee and the total separately. We haven’t published a checked British Columbia price for Mounjaro yet.

What BC pharmacists can and can’t do

Since 1 June 2023, BC residents can get prescriptions from a pharmacist for contraceptives and for 21 minor ailments, such as allergies, shingles, cold sores, pink eye and uncomplicated urinary tract infections. The pharmacist assesses you and may recommend self-care, over-the-counter products or a prescription medication, or send you to another provider. We haven’t confirmed what BC pharmacists can do beyond that list, such as renewals.

Starting Mounjaro is different. It’s approved for type 2 diabetes, which needs a diagnosis, and the usual starting point is a physician or nurse practitioner. A pharmacist can tell you what your plan would do with a prescription once you have one.

If you have a private plan

With no PharmaCare benefit, a work or personal plan is the main route to coverage in BC. Plans usually decide Mounjaro on their own terms, and many ask for prior authorization before they pay. Lilly’s program also offers help with private insurance forms for people prescribed Mounjaro KwikPen. Read how the Mounjaro savings card works.

Questions people ask

Is Mounjaro covered by BC PharmaCare?

Does Fair PharmaCare help if Mounjaro isn't a benefit?

What is Special Authority in BC?

Can a BC pharmacist prescribe Mounjaro?

BC's pharmacist prescribing service covers contraception and a defined list of minor ailments. Starting Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes would normally be done by a physician or nurse practitioner.

Does the Mounjaro savings card work in BC?
