Zepbound is sold in Alberta. We haven't confirmed a listing on the Alberta government drug list, but Alberta Blue Cross publishes a special authorization form for Zepbound under employer plans. Pharmacies set their own dispensing fees here, so quotes differ.

Is Zepbound covered in Alberta?
It depends on which plan you mean. For Alberta government-sponsored coverage, we haven’t confirmed a listing for Zepbound on the Alberta Drug Benefit List. The Alberta Blue Cross special authorization form for government-sponsored GLP-1 drugs that we read is for type 2 diabetes, and it doesn’t name tirzepatide.
For employer group plans that Alberta Blue Cross administers, the picture is different. Alberta Blue Cross publishes a special authorization request form (ABC 60130, dated May 2026) for weight loss drugs that lists tirzepatide (Zepbound) alongside liraglutide, naltrexone plus bupropion and semaglutide. A special authorization is a form your prescriber sends the insurer before the plan agrees to pay. The form says a request may or may not be approved.
Partial coverageEmployer plans: special authorization form names Zepbound. Government-sponsored listing not confirmed (read 3 Oct 2026).
What the Alberta Blue Cross employer form asks for
The form is useful even if you aren’t applying, because it shows what an insurer wants before it considers paying. Your prescriber completes it, and it asks for:
the drug requested and whether this is a first trial, second trial or renewal
the indication, which is chronic weight management on the form, and whether the drug will be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity
BMI and body weight measured just before starting, with dates, and for a BMI of 27 to under 30, any weight-related conditions
the weight-management interventions that haven’t worked
for renewals, current body weight while on the drug
The form states a maximum of two trials per drug per lifetime, whether or not you respond or stop early. This is the form’s rule for the request type. Your employer’s own plan may set other limits, so ask your insurer.
How Alberta pharmacy fees work
Alberta stands apart from BC on fees. The Alberta College of Pharmacy says that under the Health Professions Act it cannot set or provide guidelines for dispensing fees or professional fees, and that discounting those fees isn’t prohibited. So there is no province-wide cap on what a pharmacy charges you in cash.
The province does publish what it pays pharmacies for government-sponsored services, including a dispensing fee that is lower for short supplies and higher for supplies of 84 days or more, and fees for pharmacist services. Those are what Alberta pays, not a price list for you. We’ve put the amounts in our data proposals so they carry a source and date. A pharmacy’s Zepbound quote can still include a markup and a fee of its own. Ask for drug cost, markup and fee as separate lines. We haven’t published an Alberta pharmacy price for Zepbound yet.
Who can prescribe Zepbound in Alberta
Alberta works differently from a minor-ailment list. A pharmacist on the clinical register can apply for additional prescribing authorization (APA) from the Alberta College of Pharmacy, and the College’s page says an approved applicant is authorized to prescribe Schedule 1 drugs. Before prescribing to manage or initiate drug therapy, a pharmacist needs that authorization on their practice permit. The page gives no count of how many pharmacists hold it. The province pays a listed fee for a pharmacist to prescribe at initial access, and a different fee to renew or adapt a prescription.
That scope doesn’t mean every pharmacist will prescribe a weight-management drug, or that it’s right for you. They decide using their own standards, and you may still be sent to a physician or nurse practitioner. Our provider guide explains the online options.

How to get an Alberta quote
Get the strength and number of weeks from your prescriber.
Ask two or three pharmacies for drug cost, markup and dispensing fee as separate lines. Because Alberta fees are the pharmacy’s own, expect more spread between quotes.
Ask whether a longer supply changes the fee.
If you have an employer plan, ask Alberta Blue Cross or your plan administrator whether special authorization is needed before you fill.
For employer group plans, Alberta Blue Cross has a special authorization form that names Zepbound for chronic weight management. Whether your plan covers it depends on your employer's plan design.
Is Zepbound on the Alberta Drug Benefit List?
We haven't confirmed a listing for weight management. The government-sponsored GLP-1 form we read covers type 2 diabetes drugs and doesn't name tirzepatide.
How many times can I try Zepbound under an Alberta Blue Cross employer plan?
The form says a maximum of two trials per drug per lifetime, whether or not you respond or stop early. Your own plan may differ, so ask your insurer.
Who sets dispensing fees in Alberta?
Each pharmacy does. The Alberta College of Pharmacy says it cannot set or provide guidelines for dispensing or professional fees, and that discounting isn't prohibited.
Can an Alberta pharmacist prescribe Zepbound?
A pharmacist with additional prescribing authorization from the Alberta College of Pharmacy can prescribe Schedule 1 drugs. Whether a given pharmacist holds it, or would prescribe for weight management, is something to ask them.
