Wegovy cost in Canada

Wegovy (semaglutide) is a weekly injection approved for chronic weight management, and no provincial plan we checked pays for it as a standard benefit, so most people pay the pharmacy's price. We haven't checked pharmacy prices yet, so this page explains what drives the number instead of guessing at one.

What Wegovy is approved for

Wegovy contains semaglutide, the same ingredient as Ozempic, but Health Canada authorizes it for a different purpose. The product monograph (the official prescribing document) lists it as an add-on to a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity for chronic weight management. In adults that means a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure or sleep apnea. It is also authorized for adolescents aged 12 to under 18 who meet separate criteria.

The current monograph, authorized on 10 December 2025, adds two more uses. Wegovy is approved to reduce the risk of a non-fatal heart attack in adults with established cardiovascular disease and a BMI of 27 or higher. It is also approved to treat MASH (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, a fatty liver disease that can scar the liver) in adults with moderate to advanced liver scarring. Health Canada granted the MASH use with conditions, pending further trials. See our news update on Wegovy and liver disease.

The monograph says Wegovy should not be combined with other semaglutide products such as Ozempic or Rybelsus, or with another GLP-1 medication.

How the dose changes what you buy

Wegovy comes as a pre-filled pen injected once a week. The monograph starts everyone on 0.25 mg and raises the dose every 4 weeks (0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg) until the maintenance dose of 2.4 mg is reached at week 17. Each step is a different pen, so a first month of treatment and a later month are not the same product on the shelf.

That matters for price. A pharmacy may quote one strength, and the next fill can be a different pen with a different drug cost. Ask which dose your quote covers and how many weeks of supply it includes.

What is in the price

A pharmacy’s total for Wegovy has three parts:

  1. The drug cost. What the pharmacy pays for the pens. For brand-name drugs without public coverage, the manufacturer’s list price sets the starting point.
  2. The markup. The pharmacy’s percentage added to the drug cost. Pharmacies set this themselves for people paying without a plan.
  3. The dispensing fee. A flat charge for filling the prescription, covering the pharmacist’s checks and counselling. Pharmacies set their own fees, so two pharmacies on the same street can quote different totals.

Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy site makes the same point about its Savings Card: the estimate varies by pharmacy markup, and dispensing fees are not included. We state a total only when we have checked it with a pharmacy and can date it.

Why it differs by province

Prices differ because each province regulates pharmacy fees differently, and because public plan rules decide whether a plan helps at all. Our province pages go through each one: Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta. Prices for other provinces will follow as we check them.

The short version is that Wegovy is outside the public formulary (the list of drugs a plan pays for) in the provinces we have read. British Columbia published a formal decision not to list it on 18 December 2025.

Insurance, savings cards and delivery

Some employer and private plans cover weight-management drugs after special authorization. Alberta Blue Cross, for example, publishes a request form for employer plans that lists Wegovy among the drugs it can review. Whether your plan has this benefit depends on your employer’s choices, so check your benefits booklet or call the insurer. See coverage by province for what each public plan says.

Novo Nordisk also lists a patient support program, Novo Nordisk Care for Wegovy, on its Canadian site. We haven’t confirmed what it includes, so ask the program or your insurer directly. For delivery, Novo Nordisk Care Rx (with Rexall Direct) ships to every province and territory except Quebec, with savings applied automatically for eligible people and no subscription fee, according to the 13 May 2026 announcement.

Generic semaglutide

BC’s decision says the province will review manufacturer submissions for generic semaglutide when they reach the market. We track the Health Canada status of each product on our generics page. Until a generic is authorized and priced, the brand-name product is the one you will see quoted.

How to ask a pharmacy for a Wegovy quote

  1. Have your prescription, or your prescriber’s note on the pen strength, in hand.
  2. Ask for the total for your starting pen and for the maintenance pen, and how many weeks each lasts.
  3. Ask what the dispensing fee is and whether it is charged on every fill.
  4. Ask whether the pharmacy accepts the manufacturer’s Savings Card and what it brings the total to.
  5. If you have private insurance, ask whether the pharmacy can bill the plan directly after approval.

Phone two or three pharmacies, because the markup and fee are set by each one. Compare telehealth providers separately: a provider’s fee covers the assessment, not the medication. For any decision about whether Wegovy suits you, talk to a prescriber or pharmacist.

Questions people ask

Is there a single Wegovy price in Canada?

No. Each pharmacy adds its own markup and dispensing fee to the drug's cost, and the dose you are on changes which pens you buy. We haven't published a checked price yet, and we won't estimate one.

Do provincial drug plans pay for Wegovy?

Not as a standard benefit in the three provinces we have checked so far (Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta). Some employer plans cover it after special authorization, which means your prescriber sends the insurer a form first.

What is the Wegovy Savings Card?

It is a manufacturer discount that Novo Nordisk describes on wegovy.ca. The site says the estimate varies by pharmacy markup, that dispensing fees are not included, and that the program may change or end at any time.

Can I get Wegovy delivered?

Novo Nordisk Canada and Rexall announced a home delivery service called Novo Nordisk Care Rx on 13 May 2026. It covers every province and territory except Quebec. You still need a prescription first.

Do I need a prescription for Wegovy?

Yes. It is a prescription medication. A prescriber assesses whether it suits you and writes the prescription, and your pharmacist dispenses it.
