What the Ontario Drug Benefit record shows for Wegovy
The Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) program pays for drugs on the ODB Formulary, the list the Ministry of Health maintains. We looked up the Wegovy 4 mg/3 mL pen (DIN 02528525) in the Formulary search tool on 3 October 2026. The record lists a Formulary listing date of 31 August 2026 and a coverage status of “Off-Formulary Interchangeable”. It shows “Interchangeables: YES”, and N/A for both the Drug Benefit Price and the amount the ministry pays.
“Off-Formulary Interchangeable” is a database status. It records that a product is interchangeable with other products. It is not a funding listing, and this record shows no ministry payment. We found no ODB payment for Wegovy, and Health Canada approves it for chronic weight management, not type 2 diabetes, so there is no diabetes route either.
OHIP+ and other public routes
Ontario has three routes besides the standard Formulary. We found no published route in any of them to Wegovy for weight management.
- OHIP+ is how people aged 24 or younger who aren’t covered by a private insurance plan qualify for the ODB program, according to ontario.ca.
- The Trillium Drug Program helps households whose drug costs are high compared with income. The deductible (what you pay before coverage begins) is usually about 4% of after-tax household income, and only ODB-eligible drug costs count toward it. Because we found no ODB payment for Wegovy, we don’t expect what you pay for it to count. We haven’t confirmed that with the program.
- The Exceptional Access Program (EAP) covers almost 1,500 additional drug products that meet specific criteria, according to ontario.ca. Your prescriber applies. We haven’t found criteria for Wegovy.
Why the Ontario price depends on the pharmacy
With no public payer, the price you see is the pharmacy’s own: drug cost, markup and a dispensing fee. We haven’t confirmed how Ontario regulates fees charged to people paying without a plan, so ask each pharmacy for its fee before you fill and compare.
The monograph’s dose steps also affect the bill. Wegovy starts at 0.25 mg weekly and rises every 4 weeks to 2.4 mg, so a quote for one pen is not a quote for the whole course. See what makes up the Wegovy price.
Who can prescribe Wegovy in Ontario
Wegovy is a prescription medication, and a prescriber assesses whether it suits you. A nurse practitioner is a nurse with advanced training who can diagnose and prescribe. We haven’t confirmed what Ontario pharmacists may prescribe for chronic weight management, so ask your pharmacist. Once you have a prescription, the pharmacist dispenses it and can answer questions about the pen.
Private insurance and savings in Ontario
Because we found no public payment, an employer or private plan is the main route to help with cost. Many plans require special authorization, meaning your prescriber sends the insurer a form before it will pay. Ask your insurer whether weight-management drugs are covered at all, since that depends on your employer’s plan design. The manufacturer’s Savings Card is separate from insurance, and the site says dispensing fees are not included. Read our Ontario coverage page for the public plan details.
How to get an Ontario quote
- Ask your prescriber for the prescription and the starting strength.
- Call two or three pharmacies and ask for the full total: drug, markup and dispensing fee.
- Ask whether they take the Savings Card, and what you would pay with it.
- If you have a private plan, ask whether the pharmacy can submit a test claim before you commit.
Telehealth providers that serve Ontario charge for the assessment, not the medication, so compare them on the providers page. We’ll add checked Ontario pharmacy prices here, with the date, once we have them.
